Defining Techno Music

The underlying concepts in Techno music are futuristic, sci-fi, and abstract. Other than that, Techno can be Melodic, Industrial, Hard, Jazzy, Banging, Wonky or Minimal.

If you were a music listener in the 1990s, you might recall the trend where everyone referred to anything having to do with electronic music as "Techno". In the mainstream, historically, Techno was a very ambiguous, all-encompassing term.

The term Techno music describes music being made with technology, hence Kraftwerk being coined as the originator of Techno. Since then, Techno has influenced, and been influenced by a number of different genres. Over time we have heard Jazz Techno, Tribal Techno, Melodic Techno, Tech-House, Acid Techno, Ambient Techno and Dub Techno.

Techno is produced using synthesisers and samplers either outboard hardware or software running on a computer. Typical hardware instruments in Techno include the Roland 909 and 808 drum machines, the Roland TB-303 for Acid Techno, Korg MS 20 and modular equipment. Software running in a digital audio workstation, like Ableton or Cubase, is far more accessible with a huge range of instruments available, such as synthesisers, sequencers, delays, reverbs, and many other tools built into the DAW, or third-party plugins.

Techno is distinguished by:

  • A futuristic, or Sci-Fi theme
  • An abstract vibe
  • Strong emphasis on rhythm

Techno music typically includes

  • Strong focus on modulating rhythm
  • Synthesized kick drums, normally placed on every beat, in 4/4
  • Offbeat high hat or ride.
  • A progressive arrangement
  • Atmospheric vibes
  • Repetitive, loop-based music
  • Emphasis on percussion

Once described as the sound of tin cans falling down the stairs, this rhythmical genre is popular in underground scenes such as the rave scene, or the UK warehouse scene, and is always pushing to be different from more mainstream Dance music.

Instead of a focus on happy party vibes, Techno focus's on building tension through its repetitive chaos.
