Defining Trance Music

Trance music is characterized by its use of breakdowns, build-ups, and energetic melodic sequences which became more musical and complex as the genre progressed. Trance is typically produced at 130bpm to 150bpm, however, the Tempo can vary outside of this range, especially with faster Hard Trance or, Trance that takes more of a chill-out, or ambient approach, such as the Northern Exposure compilation albums mixed by Sasha and John Digweed.

The Trance genre is heavily reliant on electronically synthesized melodic sequences which are typically side-chained to a four-to-the-floor kick drum pattern. The melodies are often heavily quantized and create a hypnotic effect by making use of dotted 8th-note rhythms. This is backed by a driving, fast-paced, energetic bassline and uses tones rich in harmonics, usually a saw tooth or square wave oscillator. Lush Pads, chord progression, and backing atmospheres are swamped with effects such as delay and reverb to add emotion to breakdowns and build-ups.
