Trap Music: What Is It?

Trap is a subgenre originating from Rap and Hip Hop music. Traditionally the lyrics would be about selling and using drugs and general parts of street life. Today, you can hear Trap music in lots of modern genres, such as R&B, electronic dance music, electro-house, and dubstep.

Trap music is usually faster than Hip hop, with bass-heavy production and genre-defining hi-hat patterns, called the Triple beat. The Triplet beat is often known as the Triplet flow, or Migos flow, this rhythmic and arrangement style gives Trap its rolling, mesmerizing sound. The Triplet flow is created by playing three beats in the space ordinarily occupied by two. Setting the grid in your DAW to 16T (triplets) or 8T (triplets) would achieve this.

The foundation of Trap music includes Rapping and Synth, sampled, or plucked melodies. Driven by punchy beats, normally synthesised, or from a Roland 808 or 909, with basslines constructed from 808 Kick drums, and that Trap rolling Triplet hi-hat pattern.

History of Trap Music

The origins of Trap music lie in Southern parts of the United States starting in the 1990s. From Atlanta and Georgia.. Early trap artists include 8Ball & MJG, UGK, Master P, Ghetto Mafia, and Three 6 Mafia. It sounded like Hip Hop but used Roland TR-808 kick drums for the bass section, and triplet Hi-Hats, both remain the key elements of Trap to this day.

Trap developed further in 2000s with the influence of electronic dance music (EDM). Today, it's extremely common to hear new Trap records incorporating EDM styles and vise-versa, with both genres using drops, build-ups, and breakdown arrangements.

In 2003, the genre name "Trap" gained traction. The album Trap Muzik by rapper T.I helped coin the term.

In 2012, EDM producers like RL Grime, Baauer, and TNGHT enhanced the popularity of Trap music. They released the compilation album 'All Trap Music' in 2013 which helped bring Trap music to the mainstream.

Since 2010, we have also seen Pop artists like Drake, Beyoncé, and Rihanna using 808 basslines and triplet Hi-hat patterns. The Trap sound is even found as far as Reggaeton and even Korean Pop or K-Pop.
